We’re thrilled you’re thinking about Marriage, and glad you are considering getting married at St George’s.
Who can be married at St George’s Wembdon?
You can be married at St George’s if you have a ‘qualifying connection’ with St George’s. From 1st October 2008, one or both of you need to be able to claim at least one of the following:
- I was baptised in the parish (by a Church of England service/form of baptism).
- I have been confirmed (by a Church of England service) and my confirmation is entered in a register belonging to St George’s Wembdon.
- My parent or grandparent was married in the parish by a Church of England service.
- I have had my usual place of residence in the parish for at least 6 month.
- My parent has had his or her usual place of residence in the parish for at least 6 months during my lifetime.
- I have habitually attended public worship at Church of England services in the parish for at least 6 months.
- My parent has habitually attended public worship at Church of England services in the parish for at least 6 months during my lifetime.
Marriage in Church is not available at St George’s if either of you have been married before, and your former spouse is still living (ie you are divorced but not widowed). Please ask about a Service of Blessing after a civil ceremony. Please also note that special rules apply if either or both of you are foreign nationals.
What do I do next?
Contact Andy & Alyson Powell (425082) in the first instance. They are the parish Wedding Clerks and will be able to answer most questions.

The application form you will need to complete is available from Andy & Alyson, or can be downloaded below. Andy & Alyson will guide you through the rest of the process. We will also invite you to an event during the year to help you prepare for your married life together as well as to prepare for your wedding day. If you are not able to attend (eg because you normally live away from Bridgwater) we urge you to be in touch with your local church to take part in their marriage preparation course or meeting.
